The Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate programmes, or CUET UG, gives students a common examination route for applying to Central Universities and other participating institutions. A CUET score, however, does not automatically make a candidate eligible for every university or course.

What Is CUET UG?

CUET stands for Common University Entrance Test. CUET UG is used for admission to undergraduate programmes offered by Central Universities and other participating State, Deemed, Private and government institutions.

NTA manages the application process, examination, answer keys and scorecards. Participating universities decide programme eligibility, merit lists, counselling, document verification and final admission.

This distinction is important: appearing for CUET does not by itself create a right to admission. Candidates must fulfil the programme-specific requirements of each university to which they apply.

CUET UG 2027 Important Dates

NTA has not announced the official CUET UG 2027 schedule. The following table is for planning only.

Event Planning Estimate—Not an Official Date
CUET UG 2027 notification January 2027
Application form opens January 2027
Application deadline To be announced
Correction window Likely after the application period
Examination-city information Closer to the examination
Admit card Shortly before the allotted paper date
CUET UG 2027 examination Likely May or early June 2027
Provisional answer key After the examination
Result and scorecard Likely June or July 2027

The estimate is based primarily on the 2026 cycle. Applications for CUET UG 2026 were accepted from 3 to 30 January. The examination was ultimately conducted from 11 to 31 May and again on 6–7 June for rescheduled papers. Results were declared on 23 June 2026.

Important: Students should not use an estimated date as a deadline. Once the 2027 bulletin is published, this table should be replaced with the official schedule.

Can I Take CUET After Class 12?

Yes. Under the 2026 rules, students who had passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination, as well as those appearing in Class 12 during that admission year, could take CUET UG. NTA did not impose a general examination age limit. Universities could still apply their own age, qualifying-examination or programme conditions.

This generally allows applications from:

  • Current Class 12 students
  • Students who have already passed Class 12
  • Droppers
  • Candidates with a gap year

A university may nevertheless restrict the acceptable year of passing, compulsory Class 12 subjects or minimum marks for a specific programme. Candidates with a gap year must therefore check every target university’s current prospectus.

CUET UG 2027 Eligibility Criteria

NTA provides the common examination, while participating universities control admission eligibility.

Eligibility Factor What Candidates Must Check
Qualifying examination Whether Class 12 or the equivalent qualification is accepted
Passing status Whether appearing and previously passed candidates are eligible
Minimum percentage The course or university’s required Class 12 marks
Age Any university- or programme-specific age rule
Class 12 subjects Compulsory subjects for the desired programme
CUET papers The language, domain or aptitude papers required for admission
Year of passing Any restriction applied by the university
Reservation Category rules, certificate format and applicable relaxations
Additional conditions Audition, practical test, medical fitness, portfolio or other requirements where applicable

University policies concerning qualifications, subject combinations, reservation, preferences and admission conditions continue to apply even when a candidate is eligible to appear for CUET.

Is There a Minimum Percentage for CUET?

NTA does not prescribe one universal Class 12 percentage for every participating programme. The admitting university decides the qualifying marks and any relaxation.

A student may therefore be permitted to sit for CUET but remain ineligible for a particular course because of the university’s Class 12 requirement.

Is There an Age Limit for CUET?

The 2026 CUET UG examination had no general NTA age limit. Candidates still had to satisfy any age condition imposed by the university or programme. The 2027 bulletin must be checked for confirmation.

Reservation Rules

Reservation and relaxation are applied according to the rules governing the admitting institution. Candidates claiming a reserved category should obtain the required certificate in the prescribed format and check its validity period before the application and counselling stages.

How to Apply for CUET UG 2027

The official 2027 application process has not been published. Based on the latest NTA process, candidates should expect the following stages:

    1. Read university eligibility first. Shortlist programmes and note their compulsory Class 12 subjects and CUET papers.
    2. Register on the official CUET UG portal. Enter a personal email address and mobile number that will remain accessible throughout the admission cycle.
    3. Complete the application form. Add personal, academic, category, test-paper and examination-city information.
    4. Upload the prescribed documents. Follow the file type and size rules in the bulletin.
    5. Pay the examination fee. Fees normally depend on category and the number of papers selected.
    6. Download the confirmation page. An application should not be treated as complete until payment is successful and the confirmation page is generated.

Documents Candidates Should Prepare

The exact 2027 requirements will appear in the new bulletin. The 2026 application required items such as:

  • A live photograph captured during registration
  • A recent scanned passport-size photograph
  • A scanned signature
  • A disability or UDID certificate, where applicable
  • Identity proof in cases where the prescribed alternative verification method was used

Candidates should also keep their Class 10 and Class 12 details, category certificate and personal identification records consistent.

Application Fee: 2026 Reference

The CUET UG 2027 fee has not been announced. The following 2026 amounts are included only to help families estimate a possible budget.

Category Up to Three Papers in 2026 Each Additional Paper in 2026
General ₹1,000 ₹400
OBC-NCL/EWS ₹900 ₹375
SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/Third gender ₹800 ₹350
Centres outside India ₹4,500 ₹1,800

Processing charges and applicable taxes could be additional. Candidates must use the 2027 fee table once published.

CUET UG Exam Structure

The latest confirmed framework grouped CUET papers into:

  • Languages
  • Domain subjects
  • General Aptitude Test

The 2026 cycle offered 37 papers: 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and one General Aptitude Test. Candidates could select a maximum of five papers.

Not every candidate needs papers from all three groups. The required combination depends on the course and institution.

For example:

  • One programme may require a language and three domain papers.
  • Another may require a language, one domain and the General Aptitude Test.
  • A third may calculate merit from a specific group of science or commerce papers.

These examples are illustrative. Only the university’s current admission rules establish the correct combination.

CUET UG 2027 Exam Pattern

The 2027 pattern is not confirmed. The table below shows the 2026 pattern currently available for preparation planning.

Feature CUET UG 2026 Reference Pattern
Mode Computer-Based Test
Question type Objective multiple-choice questions
Questions 50 per paper
Questions to attempt All 50 compulsory
Duration 60 minutes per paper
Correct answer +5 marks
Incorrect answer −1 mark
Unanswered question 0 marks
Maximum paper choices Five
Shifts Multiple shifts where required

Quick Summary: With negative marking, the aim is not to attempt every doubtful question. Candidates should balance attempt rate with accuracy.

A useful mock-test calculation is:

Accuracy percentage = Correct answers ÷ Attempted questions × 100

Track both score and accuracy. A rising attempt count with falling accuracy may indicate excessive guessing rather than genuine progress.

How to Choose the Correct CUET Subjects

Under the 2026 NTA framework, candidates could choose papers irrespective of the subjects studied in Class 12. This flexibility did not override university eligibility. A university could still require candidates to have studied a particular Class 12 subject or to take a prescribed CUET combination.

Four-Step Subject-Selection Method

  1. List the exact programme names. B.Com and B.Com (Hons.) may have different conditions.
  2. List every target university. Do not assume the same course has the same combination everywhere.
  3. Copy the required CUET papers. Record compulsory and optional alternatives separately.
  4. Choose the smallest combination that preserves the most valid options. Remain within NTA’s permitted paper limit.

A simple planning table can prevent errors:

University Programme Class 12 Requirement Required CUET Papers Separate Admission Form?
University A Course 1 Enter official rule Enter official combination Yes/No
University B Course 2 Enter official rule Enter official combination Yes/No
University C Course 3 Enter official rule Enter official combination Yes/No

Pro Tip — Kaushik Kapoor: Treat subject selection as an admission decision, not merely an examination decision. A high score in papers that do not satisfy a programme’s combination rules cannot repair the eligibility error later.

Illustrative Five-Paper Combinations

These examples are not universal recommendations.

Aspirant Profile Illustrative Combination
Commerce English, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and General Aptitude Test
PCM science English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and General Aptitude Test
PCB science English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Aptitude Test
Humanities English, History, Political Science, Geography and General Aptitude Test

The General Aptitude Test is not compulsory for every programme. Likewise, the fifth paper may be better used for another domain subject when it keeps more university options open.

CUET UG Syllabus

Students should download the official syllabus PDF for every selected paper. A generic stream summary cannot replace the paper-wise NTA document.

  • Language papers tested reading comprehension, literary aptitude and vocabulary.
  • Domain papers followed the applicable NCERT syllabus.
  • The General Aptitude Test covered general knowledge, current affairs, mental ability, numerical ability, quantitative reasoning and logical and analytical reasoning.

Language Papers

CUET language preparation should cover:

  • Factual, literary and narrative reading passages
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Literary aptitude
  • Verbal comprehension
  • Speed and accuracy when reading unfamiliar material

Students should practise timed passages instead of relying only on grammar exercises.

Domain Subjects

The official 2026 syllabus page listed 23 domain papers. Frequently selected papers included the following.

Science Papers

Paper Subject Code
Physics 322
Chemistry 306
Biology/Biological Science/Biotechnology/Biochemistry 304
Mathematics/Applied Mathematics 319
Computer Science/Information Practices 308
Environmental Science 307

Science students should compare the official CUET syllabus with their board syllabus chapter by chapter. Mark each topic as:

  • Fully covered in school
  • Partially covered
  • Not covered
  • Revised
  • Practised through timed MCQs

Commerce Papers

Paper Subject Code
Accountancy/Book-Keeping 301
Business Studies 305
Economics/Business Economics 309
Mathematics/Applied Mathematics 319

Commerce preparation should combine NCERT concept revision with objective practice. Accountancy candidates should understand the reasoning behind entries and treatments rather than memorising formats without context.

Humanities Papers

Paper Subject Code
History 314
Geography/Geology 313
Political Science 323
Psychology 324
Sociology 326
Home Science 315
Mass Media/Mass Communication 318
Fine Arts/Visual Arts/Commercial Arts 312

Humanities candidates should pay particular attention to textbook terminology, chronology, source interpretation, maps, case-based questions and close distinctions between similar concepts.

General Aptitude Test

The General Aptitude Test may include:

  • General knowledge
  • Current affairs
  • General mental ability
  • Numerical ability
  • Arithmetic and basic algebra
  • Geometry and mensuration
  • Statistics
  • Logical reasoning
  • Analytical reasoning

Study it only when it is required by a target programme or when it preserves a useful admission option.

How to Prepare for CUET UG 2027

1. Finalise Courses Before Building a Timetable

Do not begin by randomly choosing popular papers. Create the course–university matrix first. This determines what must be studied and prevents wasted preparation.

2. Audit the Official Syllabus

For every selected paper:

  • Download the official syllabus
  • Compare it with the relevant NCERT books
  • Identify uncovered or weak chapters
  • Build a chapter checklist
  • Assign revision and practice dates

3. Build the NCERT Foundation

For most domain papers, begin with the prescribed NCERT material. Focus on:

  • Definitions
  • Examples
  • Diagrams and tables
  • Formulae
  • Exceptions
  • Relationships between concepts
  • Textbook language that can be converted into MCQs

Reference books should supplement—not replace—the official syllabus and core texts.

4. Balance Boards and CUET

Class 12 students should avoid treating board preparation and CUET preparation as unrelated projects.

A practical weekly plan may include:

  • Domain concept revision aligned with board preparation
  • Two or three timed language or aptitude sessions
  • Topic-wise MCQs after each revised chapter
  • One mixed test
  • One test-analysis session
  • One revision block for previous errors

5. Practise Objective Questions

After completing a topic:

  1. Solve untimed questions to confirm understanding.
  2. Review every incorrect or uncertain response.
  3. Repeat the topic under a time limit.
  4. Add recurring errors to an error log.
  5. Retest the topic after several days.

6. Analyse Mock Tests Properly

Classify every lost mark as one of the following:

Error Type Example Corrective Action
Knowledge error Formula or fact not known Relearn the concept
Interpretation error Misread a passage or condition Practise careful reading
Calculation error Arithmetic mistake Improve written steps and checking
Time error Knew the method but could not finish Use timed drills
Selection error Attempted a low-confidence question Improve attempt strategy
Guessing error Marked without eliminating options Set a confidence threshold

Pro Tip: A mock is complete only after its analysis has produced a specific action list.

7. Use an Error Log

Record:

  • Paper and chapter
  • Question type
  • Why the answer was wrong
  • Correct concept or method
  • Whether the mistake has occurred before
  • Date for retesting

Review repeated errors more frequently than isolated mistakes.

8. Develop a Test-Day Attempt Strategy

A practical sequence is:

  1. Answer direct and high-confidence questions.
  2. Move to questions requiring moderate calculation or interpretation.
  3. Revisit marked questions.
  4. Leave low-confidence guesses unless elimination makes an attempt reasonable.
  5. Reserve time to verify recorded responses.

9. Revise in Cycles

Use spaced revision rather than saving all revision for the final weeks.

  • First revision: Shortly after learning
  • Second revision: After a few days
  • Third revision: Through mixed questions
  • Final revision: From short notes, formula sheets and the error log

Admit Card, Answer Key and Result Process

Examination City and Admit Card

NTA normally announces examination-city information and admit cards through the official portal. Candidates must verify:

  • Name and photograph
  • Paper and subject code
  • Date and shift
  • Reporting time
  • Examination centre
  • Permitted and prohibited items
  • Identification requirements

Any discrepancy should be reported through the official helpdesk specified for that cycle.

Provisional Answer Key

NTA publishes provisional answer keys and recorded responses before results. In 2026, challenges required a non-refundable processing payment of ₹200 per challenged question. The amount and procedure may change for 2027.

Candidates should:

  1. Download their recorded responses.
  2. Compare them with the provisional key.
  3. Use reliable academic evidence before filing a challenge.
  4. Submit challenges only through the prescribed process and deadline.
  5. Retain copies of relevant records.

Raw Marks and NTA Score

For a paper held in multiple shifts, the raw marks obtained in different sessions may be converted into an NTA score using NTA’s stated procedure. The scorecard should therefore be interpreted according to the rules in the applicable bulletin.

University Registration and Counselling

NTA does not prepare one national admission list for every course. After the scorecard is released, candidates must follow the admission process of each target institution.

A university may require:

  • A separate admission or counselling registration
  • Programme preferences
  • Uploading of CUET scores
  • Category and academic documents
  • Preference ordering
  • Seat acceptance and fee payment
  • Physical or online document verification

NTA’s role ends with the examination and score-related process; participating universities prepare their own merit lists and counselling schedules.

Is There One CUET Cut-Off?

No. There is no single universal CUET cut-off for every institution and course.

Cut-offs may vary by:

  • University
  • Programme
  • Category
  • Subject combination
  • Number of applicants
  • Available seats
  • Admission round
  • The university’s merit calculation method

Candidates should use only the official admission portal of the relevant university for allocation scores, merit lists and cut-offs.

Is CUET Coaching Necessary?

Coaching is not compulsory. A disciplined student can prepare independently with:

  • Official syllabus PDFs
  • NCERT books
  • Objective-question practice
  • Previous examination material
  • Timed mocks
  • A consistent test-analysis process

Coaching may be useful when a student needs:

  • Help selecting papers
  • A fixed study structure
  • Explanations for difficult concepts
  • Regular testing
  • Doubt-solving support
  • Feedback on time management and accuracy

Evaluate a programme by examining its faculty, syllabus coverage, mock quality, analysis system, doubt support, batch size and current student outcomes. Avoid choosing solely on the basis of superlatives or advertised question counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the full form of CUET?

CUET stands for Common University Entrance Test. CUET UG is the undergraduate examination used by Central Universities and other participating institutions for admissions to eligible programmes.

Who conducts CUET UG?

The National Testing Agency conducts CUET UG and manages registration, the examination, answer keys and scorecards. Participating universities manage eligibility, merit lists, counselling and admission.

Are the CUET UG 2027 dates confirmed?

No. As of 4 August 2026, NTA has not published the CUET UG 2027 information bulletin. Any dates currently presented for 2027 are estimates and must not be treated as official deadlines.

Can I take CUET after passing Class 12?

Yes. Previously passed candidates and current Class 12 students could appear under the 2026 rules. University-specific year-of-passing and programme requirements still applied.

Can droppers apply for CUET?

Generally, yes. However, a dropper must check whether the target university applies a restriction relating to age, year of passing or qualifying subjects.

How many subjects can I choose?

The 2026 framework allowed a maximum of five papers, including languages and the General Aptitude Test. The 2027 limit will be confirmed in the new bulletin.

Is the General Aptitude Test compulsory?

No. It is compulsory only when the desired university or programme includes it in the required admission combination.

Can I choose a subject that I did not study in Class 12?

The 2026 NTA rules allowed candidates to select papers irrespective of their Class 12 subjects. A university could still require the relevant Class 12 subject or apply a subject-mapping rule. Check both NTA’s rules and the programme prospectus.

Is NCERT enough for CUET?

NCERT is the primary foundation for many domain subjects, but it is not a complete preparation method. Students also need official syllabus mapping, objective-question practice, timed tests, revision and analysis of mistakes.

How many universities accept CUET?

A total of 244 universities participated in the 2026 cycle. The number and participating institutions can change each year, so students should use the official list for 2027 once it is published.

Does appearing for CUET guarantee admission?

No. Admission depends on programme eligibility, the university’s merit criteria, available seats, category rules, document verification and counselling.

Do I need to apply to universities separately?

In many cases, yes. Universities may require candidates to complete a separate admission or counselling form after or alongside CUET. Follow every target institution’s official admissions portal.

Is there one common CUET cut-off?

No. Cut-offs differ by university, course, category and admission round. NTA does not declare one universal admission cut-off.

Is coaching necessary for CUET?

No. Coaching is optional. It is most useful for candidates who need structure, concept support, subject-selection guidance, regular testing or individual feedback.

Conclusion

CUET UG preparation begins with eligibility, not with a mock test. Before selecting papers, identify the exact courses and universities you want to target and verify their Class 12 and CUET subject requirements.

Until the 2027 bulletin is released, students can prepare using the latest official syllabus and the confirmed 2026 framework while treating every date, fee and pattern detail as provisional. Focus on syllabus-based study, NCERT revision, objective practice, timed mocks and detailed error analysis.

Most importantly, continue monitoring both NTA and university admission portals. NTA conducts the examination, but the university’s programme rules ultimately determine whether a score can be used for admission.
